According to The Huntsville Times in Alabama, Craig Russell, who is a former Air Force pilot, has proposed a plan to recreate John Glenn’s 1962 Mercury Mission. This was a historic mission as John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth, and Russell says that recreating this event might spark interest in the manned space flight program and honor America’s first astronauts.
The planned year to recreate this event is in 2012, which is exactly 50 years after John Glenn’s mission. Russell’s plan includes the purchase of a rocket, which will launch a refurbished Mercury capsule into orbit. The plan is for the capsule to complete the seven orbits originally planned for the 1962 missions, and upon completion of these orbits the capsule will “splash down” into the ocean.
However, in order to meet the needs this plan proposes, approximately $45 million will need to be raised. To help raise this money Russell formed a non-profit organization, called “Americans in Orbit-50 Years”, which allows anyone who is interested to donate.
If this plan proves to be successful it would be the first recreation ever of a manned space flight, and would make its own mark in this nation’s history. While the odds are stacked against him, Russell believes that with the proper support this mission can be successful.
