Yahoo in a press release yesterday said that they will now be supporting OpenID, which is a tool that helps users eliminate the need to use multiple user names for different websites. There OpenID service will become available on January 30th as a public beta, and will allow anyone with a Yahoo ID the ability to access any site that supports OpenID.
Executive vice president of platforms and infrastructure at Yahoo, Ash Patel, said “Supporting OpenID gives our users the freedom to leverage their Yahoo! ID both on and off the Yahoo! network, reducing the number of usernames and passwords they need to remember and offering a single, trusted partner for managing their online identity.”
However, not to be outdone, Google has announced today that Blogger will now be an OpenID provider. This service will allow people with blogs from Blogger to use their URL as an OpenID URL. To enable this service all you have to do is edit your profile on http://draft.blogger.com and check the box that says “Enable OpenID for Blogs.”
I personally enjoy it when two major companies battle it out, especially when it involves newer and better features for the users.
