Digg and Ask Project Results in Creation of Big News

According to the Silicon Alley Insider, “Big News” is the project created by Ask and Digg that was just rumors earlier in the week. However, BigNews looks more like a spin off of Google News and Techmeme than it does a social networking site, like Digg.

BigNews uses an algorithm to check articles for links, freshness and other things, and then associates a “Big Factor” rank based on the results from the algorithm. There is really no user interaction, because you can’t vote the articles up or down, nor can you directly write a comment about a story on BigNews.

This is what brings up the question: So how is Digg involved? Well, apparently Digg’s ratings are some how factored in to the algorithm that gives articles their “Big Factor” ranking. Also, if you scroll to the bottom of the page on BigNews, you will see two things: First are the top five Diggs in the news, and the second is a listing of five stories that have yet to be Digged.

All in all, though, the site has a nice design to it and provides you with some very interesting information about the articles (i.e associated articles, blogs, videos, images, etc.).
