Amazon announced today that they have chosen Blu-ray as their digital format of choice for their customers, in a step to help “demystify high-definition entertainment for consumers.” Yeah, like they really had a choice, especially considering Toshiba already said they were giving up on the HD DVD format, which essentially ended the high definition digital format war.
Anyways, they also said that they will start making a push towards carrying a wide selection of Blu-ray hardware and software products, which includes Blu-ray discs, players and of course the PlayStation 3. Amazon also said that they will continue to carry HD DVD products to for the suckers customers who are already HD DVD owners.
From the announcement:
“The high-definition landscape is rapidly changing, and consumers are looking for guidance on how to make the best high-definition buying decisions,” said Peter Faricy, vice president of movies and music at Amazon.com. “Our customers have clearly voiced their support for the Blu-ray format. Blu-ray titles have increased from just over half of our high-definition sales to over three-quarters of our high-definition sales since early January. In order to best serve our customers, Amazon is recommending Blu-ray as the preferred digital format and will continue to carry the ‘Earth’s Largest Selection’ of Blu-ray products.”
