Tonzr- New Web 2.0 Startup Providing Free MP3 Ringtones

That’s right! Tonzr is a new web 2.0 startup site that provides its users with free ringtones, and currently has a database consisting of over 4.8 million ringtones. Getting the ringtones is very simple, you just find the ringtone you like, preview it if you want to and then send it to your mobile phone via text message from the Tonzr site.

I could stop there and most people would be happy, because they are getting ringtones from just about any artist you can think of for Free. However, I now want to give you a little information about the people behind Tonzr, because I was a little shocked myself when I read about it, and thought it was worth sharing. Here are direct quotes from the Tonzr FAQ page:

Who built Tonzr? Who do I thank for this amazing site?
I did, of course, and you’re welcome. I’m just a normal seventeen-year-old kid with an entrepreneurial spirit and a nag for Web development. A couple months ago, I had a great idea to bring free ringtones to the world; and with the help of a very talented fifteen-year-old colleague of mine, who did a lot of important back-end programming that I was too lazy to attempt, we’ve made my idea into a reality. And no, I’m not lying about our ages.

I thought that was very interesting. Also, if you were like me and wondering why the logo looks like that of Flickr, then here is your answer:

I noticed your logo looks a lot like Flickr’s. What gives?
I’m a programmer, not a designer. I just used some Web 2.0 logo generator I found online. There’s probably a thousand other sites (like this one) that used the same exact tool to make identical looking logos. Feel free to make me a better one, though. I’ll use it if I like it.

And last but not least a FAQ that all you money tight people will want to know the answer to:

Is Tonzr ever going to charge for it’s ringtones? Is this free thing just some kind of trial-period or publicity stunt?
We have no plans to ever charge for individual ringtones. A one-time fee or subscription may eventually be required to access our site; but don’t worry. We would only do that as a last resort to stay online. We plan on doing our best to keep this service free forever.

So, if you have an internet enabled mobile phone with MP3 playback capabilities then I would recommend you go to Tonzr and get your ringtones, unless for some odd reason you like to pay for yours. If so then you really need help.

    Its good that it is free and they will make money from advertising. Sounds like a good service since you can message your tone right to your phone!

    Yes, it is definitely a good service, especially considering the number of ringtones they offer for free.

    No problem, it is a great site. I will definitely go check out the new layout. Are there any new features with the new version? If not that is fine, the service is just fine without it. :)

    @Johnathon
    Well, consistency is the main thing I added. My old method of sending the SMS and MMS was not very great, and resulted in carriers blocking the messages and banning my servers left and right. Now, we integrated a very smart carrier detection system for all of the main US carriers, which helps insure delivery of the ringtones. Other than that, user interface improvements are the most noticeable changes. I’d love any feedback or suggestions, either publicly here, or via email to info@tonzr.com. I do have some neat new features coming soon though, so definitely keep an eye out. ;)

    I will be sure to do that. Sorry it has taken so long to respond, I went out of town for business and just got back today. I had a buddy of mine publish posts that I already had written for me while I was gone.

    LOL, as if you were paying rights to the artists… NOT.

    You won’t last much, kid. Welcome to the real world.
