hi5 Launches Developer Platform and Joins as Founding Member of OpenSocial Foundation

Today is a pretty big day, as far as announcements go, for hi5, which is a leading international social networking site. They announced the launch of a robust development platform that offers common APIs to third-party developers, including the ones on OpenSocial, which will be used to create social applications for hi5 members.

This platform will allow developers to embed, monetize and spread their social applications within hi5. Also, the developers’ applications will have a great chance at growth considering hi5 has a low percentage of overlap with other social networks.

“In designing our platform, we listened to what developers wanted and focused on how we could best support the success of their applications, while also delivering an engaging and optimal experience for our users,” says hi5 Founder and CEO, Ramu Yalamanchi. “In doing so, we have provided a rich set of APIs that will enable developers to rapidly create and generate revenue from interesting, fun and relevant applications for our 80 million registered members globally.”

Also, hi5 announced that they have joined the OpenSocial Foundation as a founding member. This foundation was formed to help “ensure the neutrality and longevity of OpenSocial as an open, community-governed specification for building social applications across the Web.” Other members involved with the OpenSocial Foundation include Google, MySpace and Yahoo. It seems the OpenSocial Foundation is getting some key players since it was jointly proposed last week. I am sure we will hear more about the OpenSocial Foundation in the near future.

Wow, looks like hi5 is going to keep itself as a top social networking contender.

I like the fact that companies are getting together to help bring commonality to social applications. should really benefit developers (and users too).

I agree. It had to happen sooner or later to help developers with all the social networks.
