MySpace Now Offers Text Message Alerts to Users’ Mobile Phones

Today MySpace, the most popular social network, announced that most of its users can now use MySpace’s text message alert program on their mobile phone across major U.S. wireless service providers. The text alerts will be sent via mBlox, and is currently available from Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile USA, U.S. Cellular, Virgin Mobile USA, and Alltel Wireless.

By using MySpace’s new text alert programs users get virtually real-time notification of any new friend requests, comments, messages and other activities that are going on within their MySpace profile. Users can get this new program by logging in to MySpace and clicking on the “Text Alerts” link, which is displayed on the User Homepage.

Word from MySpace:

“MySpace users have come to depend on our text message alerts for instant notification when family and friends reach out to them on MySpace,” said Brandon Lucas, senior director of mobile business development, MySpace. “This partnership with mBlox brings us a step closer to fulfilling our vision of empowering MySpace users to stay connected with their community wherever they are, whenever they like.”

The use of mobile phones has become essential in a lot of peoples’ lives; therefore the need for companies to expand their mobile business services is pretty crucial. MySpace has definitely jumped on board here recently to offer many services to mobile phones, including the launch of their mobile website (m.myspace.com), a distribution deal with Sprint and now the addition of their text message alert program.

    It was only a matter of time. Especially with Facebook already offering this service….

    @Mattaw
    You are right. Once of the main differences between the two is that Facebook doesn’t offer Text Messaging with Virgin Mobile USA and Alltel.

    Mattaw is right, MySpace really needed to add this. Especially considering that Facebook is the second largest social network in the US.
