Today MLB Advanced Media and Yahoo! announced an advertising and video distribution partnership, which will bring access of out of market Major League Baseball games to Yahoo Sports. Also, this three-year partnership will make MLB.TV available live on Yahoo Sports through the 2010 MLB season. As for advertising, Yahoo will manage the advertising sales on MLB.TV exclusively during the 2009 and 2010 seasons. During the first year they will jointly sell advertising, though they will be using Yahoo’s ad format, Clickable, in addition to the traditional formats.
From the press release:
“This agreement exemplifies Yahoo! as the partner of choice to premier media organizations, as we’re providing MLB.com an opportunity to extend its reach to the largest possible audience, while at the same time maximizing monetization of its video subscription product,” said Todd Teresi, senior vice president of the Yahoo! Publisher Channel. “Partnering with MLB.com allows Yahoo! to offer our users an unmatched baseball experience, and also presents our advertisers with a new opportunity to reach a large, engaged audience of baseball enthusiasts.”
The MLB games will be available for viewing on both MLB.com and through a co-branded player at Yahoo Sports. Also, MLB fans from 11 different countries will have access to MLB.TV, including the Philippines, Canada, United States, United Kingdom, Mexico and Germany.
Does this agreement with MLB.com help solidify Yahoo Sports’ position as a true leader in online sports? If not, it is definitely a step in the right direction.
